![]() ![]() You learn new recipes for equipment or vehicles at a good pace. Thankfully, the game doesn’t overwhelm you with difficult encounters, and the sense of progression is quick and satisfying. The atmosphere in Subnautica: Below Zero is impeccable, particularly in tough areas where the only sounds are the distant roars of unknown creatures. And a knife isn’t too handy when a leviathan is charging towards you. That’s what sets Subnautica apart from much of its competition – compared to the other water dwellers, you’re practically powerless, so evasion and smart planning are the name of the game. And rest assured, there are horrifying moments ahead of you.Ĭertain areas are rife with dangers, but your defences are minuscule. ![]() I don’t want to spoil much, because not knowing what’s out there is just as scary as coming face to face with something horrifying. Glow whales swoop through the water absorbing shoals of fish, sea monkeys bring you gifts to help with your supplies, colossal ventgardens provide safe havens for various flora in dark waters, and more deadly leviathans lurk in the depths too. Areas like the Lilypad Islands or the Crystal Caves are beautiful and mesmerising. The biomes and alien fauna on display are just as incredible as the first. Subnautica: Below Zero is a game about exploration and survival, with sea creatures and awe-inspiring alien sights taking center stage. Subnautica isn’t known for its story though. It still feels similar in the sense that you’re putting together the pieces of something that already happened, but the characters and personal motivations were enough to hook me. Your character has a voice this time, and there are NPCs to speak to as well. The story is told quite differently compared to the first game. As you traverse the watery planet, you find out more about what happened, and there are some twists and turns along the way. However, that doesn’t sit right with our protagonist. Her employer, the research company Alterra, claims she died as a result of her own negligence. You play as Robin Ayou, and you’re on a mission to find out what happened to your sister on an alien planet. Subtle changes help differentiate it, but at its core this is an example of developers giving us more of a good thing, and that’s exactly what I wanted. The fear, the adventure, the world design and progression are all there, and more besides. ![]() Subnautica: Below Zero is the sequel to that game, and it replicates many of the things that made Subnautica so great. The way it combines underwater terror with meaningful exploration was masterful, and it quietly became one of the best survival games in history.
